Kathleen Smith, M.Sc.Ed., RN-BC, FHIMSS, and Carol Bickford, Ph.D., RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN are co-recipients of the 2011 HIMSS Nursing Informatics Leadership Award for their outstanding, long-term commitment to creating and conducting an innovative nursing informatics continuing education program and the promotion of HIMSS as a valuable resource and professional membership organization for nurses. Both Ms. Smith and Dr. Bickford are recognized informatics leaders in their own professional careers but merit significant accolades for their dedicated commitment to develop, and tireless efforts to sustain, the innovative Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics (WINI) continuing education program over the last sixteen years. Between 1995 and 2011 they have reached over 4,000 participants with the 110 WINI programs, including those hosted by the Georgia, Greater Colorado, and Greater Chicago HIMSS Chapters.

Congratulations to all of the award and scholarship recipients for their achievement and willingness to share their expertise with HIMSS and throughout the industry,” said JoAnn Klinedinst, Vice President, Professional Development, HIMSS.

Ms. Smith graduated from the University of Texas School of Nursing, Galveston, TX with a BSN, and received a Masters in Education from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. She is Board Certified in Nursing Informatics by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and a Fellow in the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. Ms. Smith had a distinguished 30-year career in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a Captain. Ms. Smith is the Managing Partner for Informatics Consulting and Continuing Education, and serves as the Chief Nursing Informatics Officer for Care Systems, Inc. She is a long time member of the American Nurses Association, the Maryland Nurses Association, and District 5, MNA. Ms. Smith served as the District 5 webmaster for over 10 years, and on the Board of Directors in a variety of positions, serving as President of District 5 from 2007-2009.

Dr Bickford graduated with a BSN from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, received a MSN from Rush University, Chicago, and a PhD in Nursing Informatics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing, She had a distinguished 22 year career in the Navy, retiring as a Commander. She is currently employed as a Senior Policy Advisor, Department of Nursing Practice & Work Environment for the American Nurses Association. Dr Bickford is Board Certified in Nursing Informatics by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is a Certified Professional in Health Information Management Systems and  Fellow in the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.  Dr Bickford was elected a Fellow in the American Association of Nurses in 2014. She is a long time member of the American Nurses Association, the Maryland Nurses Association, and District 5, MNA.
