Kathleen Smith, M.Sc.Ed., RN-BC, FHIMSS, and Dr. Carol Bickford, Ph.D., RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAMIA, FAAN, were co-recipients of the 2011 HIMSS Nursing Informatics Leadership Award for their outstanding, long-term commitment to creating and conducting an innovative nursing informatics continuing education program and the promotion of HIMSS as a valuable resource and professional membership organization for nurses. “The HIMSS award recipients are individuals and organizations who have succeeded in ensuring high quality and consistent delivery of healthcare with the use of information technology. Both Ms. Smith and Dr. Bickford are recognized informatics leaders in their own professional careers but they merit significant accolades for their dedicated commitment to develop, and tireless efforts to sustain, the innovative Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics (WINI) continuing education program over the last 25 years. Between 1995 and 2019, they have reached over 8,670 participants with the 133 WINI programs held throughout the US and portions of Canada.
